Found this wood carved rendition of a Cobra, in a little town called Clarens. Over the last few years this little town has become a haven for artists, but even the artists can appreciate the beauty of a Cobra.

That is nice. They offered one made of Pewter here that weighed 21 pounds and cost about what the first part of a kit cost. I used to get my really good models from EXOTO as they are really strict abut them being correct right down to the last detail. They had a 1/20th scale Ferrari in there for $21K, but you could buy just the engine for $15K. That is where I got my Daytona Coupe collection from.

Here are some pictures of my over priced die cast of the first Cobra made. If you look close in the one picture you can see EXP-260-1 on the valve cover. That was hand painted on both valve covers and stood for Experimental 260 engine # 1. The little cover in the trunk has the spare tire under it and I can actually take it out and change the tires on the car.

Q,

That is another of the models that I got from Exoto. They are super expensive but everything on their die casts is exact. I have several models that I got from them and one is the Crisit Edelbrock Trans Am Mustang. And the set of the 6 Daytona Coupes I got from them and the detail is perfect. Right down to the spare tire being held in place by bungee cords. I have had people who were building Daytona Coupe Kits come over to look at them to see just what the originals had where.

Here's a Kyoshi 1:12 scale 427 S/C and a GMP 1:12 289 Cobra. They both have their merits but my vote goes to the Kyoshi, or maybe I'm too partial to 427's.
The 289 has stitched leather seats!
And the 427 has a real oil leak!!! :p

"Q"

My vote also goes for the Kyoshi, nice detail work in their models. Or maybe I'm also partial to 427's. As far as the oil leak goes, have you contacted Kyoshi for a new sump gasket?;)

Ron77

FE Engines are supposed to drip oil. At one time or another I have owned every FE engine Ford made and after a short time they would all start to drip oil and even using dye I never could find where it came from. I guess they are just marking their spots.

Twincreek,

Shasta Lake is 10 miles North of Redding which is right on I-5. There are several old Gold Mining towns around here. Weaverville is one of them and they have a pretty nice car show every year. It is a great drive up there as the highway follows the old stage coach route and winds all over the canyons so the horses didn't have to try to pull the stage coaches up the mountain walls. You drive 50 miles to cover 28. I am about a two hour drive from the Oregon Border. There are places around here back in the canyons that I doubt if a human has been in them for 100 years. Just look at a California map and find I-5 and follow it North and you will see Redding and Shasta Lake. Also Shasta is an old gold mining town with a small museum where they hung the last outlaw in these parts long ago. They still have the scaffold and everything there.

Thanks for posting a photo or two of your models Ron. I noticed that some of the models don't have the vents behind the front wheels and also the exhaust was underneath the car. Was that only on the first early cars or what? Also did the Cobra's have soft top roofs or again an add on since all the reproduction kits ave been manufactured? On the South African kits I noticed that they use McPherson strut front suspension instead of the independent A Arm with a coil over? I also believed that all Cobra's had IRS x Jaguar but I have been know to be wrong.

Hotfingrs,

We have about the same amount of die casts except many of mine are still in the boxes stored in my garage attic as I don't have room to display them. I have several that they only made 100 of such as the Dale Earnheart car that he wrecked at Talladega. I need a building with glass cases just for the darn cars.
Whip,

I am not sure what you are talking about as all of the Daytona Coupes had the side vents and the side pipes came out along side the car but are set back into an channel that makes them flush with the body. The original 260/289 Cobras had soft tops but they were the kind that had to be put on by using the spring type rods and then hooked to the top of the windshields. I don't think they shipped the top with all of them as it had a bad tendency to fly off with a loud noise at around 100 mph. They even made a hard top roof for a few of the original racing Cobras to try and make them more aerodynamic.

Ron, Whip may have meant that some of the "Roadsters" models don't have fender side vents, and are running under car exhaust, rather than the coupe models?

Whip, that was the norm for some early slabside Cobras, (and certainly the AC Ace/Bristol). Even some later 427 Roadsters didn't come with the side pipes or even a hood scoop, these were designated as the "street" model. Some home builders are now aiming for that look, as it is a tad more unique, since almost all of the Replica manufactures copied the 427S/C model features.IE; hood scoop, side pipes, and fender vents.

From what I know, there were two different Roadster hard tops back in the day, although I'm not sure if the Lemans style was available from Shelby to the public? I beleive it was not only for aerodynamics, but may have been a mandatory requirement for certain races. It has since been copied, and some replica builders are using them. The other rounder style hard top may have been an "option" available from Shelby, but even that was quite rare. Again there are a few versions of it available for todays replicas.

On the Cobra's Ron was what I was thinking of about the vent opening on the guards (fender) and the side pipes. Did the body style change much with the original Cobra and I know Rod Stewart has a genuine Cobra but how many are left in the world compared to what was manufactured?

Whip,

The original Cobras used the AC body and they weren't changed. But when he went to the 427 body style they had to widen it and make some changes but kept the original shape and look. As to how many are left in the world that is almost impossible to answer as they have a lot in South America and Britain and other countries. Shelby only made 1,004 or 1011 total if you count a prototype and a couple of special made ones for the movies. That according to the 2008 registry.

Ron

...I know Rod Stewart has a genuine Cobra...

Actually Rod Stewart has owned two: an original 427 street Cobra (CSX3264) and a 1991 AC MkIV Lightweight (chassis no. AK1320). But I think he's sold them both since.

His MkIV was featured in the Aug 2011 issue of Octane magazine (http://www.classicandperformancecar.com/features/octane_features/271279/driven_ac_cobra_mkiv.html).

Rodney and I are planning some kind of pilgrimage to Darren's place in the next month or so. It's about 75-80 miles from our North OC location. I (half-jokingly) told him, "If the weather is good, I'll drive. Just not sure if we can make it there non-stop on one tank." :crazy

Seriously, the problem has to do with running a mechanical secondary carb. At certain rpms, the throttle angle starts to cause the secondaries to bleed fuel (whether the engine really needs it or not). I probably get 8-10mpg considering the way I drive this creature.

Sorry to stray from topic. We now resume our regularly scheduled programming...

Ron77

I have a few books, maybe 10/15 and some are pretty rare. I have probably over 100 die cast models of Cobras and Daytona Coupes some of which are worth a lot now. I have a die cast of the first 260 Cobra and it has the spare in the trunk and you can even remove the wheels and put the spare on. I also collected all 6 of the Daytona Coupes which took over a year as Exoto only had one made every 3 months. For collecting all 6 I received free a polished stainless steel one which one guy offered me $500 for a year or so ago. I have boxes of regular die casts in the garage attic and in my closets as I must have over 450 of them and no space to display any but the best. Some are special edition NASCAR cars such as the one Dale Earnheart wrecked at Talladega and it is correct right down to the crumpled fenders and such. I think they only made 100 of them and I knew a young guy who worked for a Chevy Dealership that could get three of them so he got me one and his Father one and he kept one.

Well for her, what about the stylish Cartier Cobra bracelet (you might have to put your AC Cobra up as security to be able to purchase this gem).

http://talk.cobraregistry.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=11913&d=1409467229

For him, and knowing male Cobra owners in general, he probably has just about every toy/model Cobra, T-shirt, watch, etc. related to Cobras. So here we have to get a bit creative! But not to worry! You have to look no further than these "Nike Air Force 1 Cobra Head Customs" sneakers for the perfect gift.

Can you remove her clothes?

I could, but can't post here though... ;)

Now don't get a fright. This is not a stolen Cobra that have been gotten hold of some graffiti artists. This is actually an artwork on display...

That must be a Jukebox Diner. There's one near me just like it. I don't recall the mural so I don't think it's the same location.

I cannot believe what I'm seeing.

That Cobra is suspended from a cable with bolt on clamps. Those things are not supposed to be used for overhead loads.
